Golden Week 2011

Busy week’s holiday! Last Saturday I was able to watch Hana’s dance class at TiMES Dance Studio – Hana was really excited and I was very proud!

It’s also been a foody holiday! Yesterday was Joe’s first ‘Boys Day’ so we went for a family lunch at 寿司竜 in Mori Machi. It’s run by Tomomi’s aunt n uncle and we had great food and a great atmosphere.

In the evening we went to Park Place for the last Circus Show (excellent again) followed by an Indian!

Now back to work :-(

Joe is now 2 months old and his first “Boy’s Day” is approaching. His grandparents came to Oita last week and took him shopping for a suit of armour!!

Dad was very happy as I’d always wanted one too!!

Hana went shopping too but had to make do with a new hat!

Being a dad again!

Hello!
It’s been a while since I wrote on the blog – having a new baby plus an energetic 6 year old can be very busy!!

Joe is now 6 weeks old and enjoys drinking milk and crying at night. His favourite hobby is keeping mum and dad awake!

Hana is being the perfect big sister though – I am very lucky to have my family and friends here in Oita!

Takeda to require 730 TOEIC score of new hires

The Yomiuri Shimbun

Beginning in 2013, Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. will require new college graduates to score 730 or more points on the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) if they want to work for the nation’s largest pharmaceutical firm, company sources said.

It is extremely unusual for major domestic corporations to set TOEIC score standards for new graduates seeking employment, except for some firms that lay down such criteria when hiring new employees as future interpreters and overseas personnel.

Takeda’s decision likely will influence the recruitment policies of other major companies, observers said.

A TOEIC score of 730 or higher indicates fluent understanding of ordinary English conversation. Those attaining that level account for a little more than 10 percent of all test takers, according to the test’s provider, the Institute for International Business Communication.

Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. is actively seeking mergers and acquisitions of venture companies that possess know-how on hiring foreign researchers or promising new drugs overseas to strengthen its overseas operations and research and development activities.

The company wants to secure workers who can bolster its global strategy by clearly specifying English proficiency in recruitment requirements, according to sources close to the firm.

Major Japanese companies have strengthened moves to expand overseas in light of the shrinking domestic market. Increasing numbers of firms have emphasized linguistic ability as prerequisites for recruitment and promotion.

Rakuten, Inc., a major Internet service company, and Fast Retailing Co., which operates Uniqlo and other stores, have revealed plans to make English the official language at their companies within two years.

友達のライヴ!

This is my friend Ryu Nishikawa – we’ve known each other since I first came to Oita in 1996! He hadn’t played live for a number of years, but picked up his guitar on new Year’s Eve. This has always been my favourite of his songs.

He’s planning to play in Oita again in February. If you have the chance please go and see him live – information will be posted here!

Snow

On Monday I promised to take Hana to play in the snow – last year when she went to England she enjoyed making snowmen and snowballs so she was very excited about snow coming to Oita ………….. but it doesn’t really snow in Oita City!! We set off at lunchtime, stopping at Ku-ta Ramen for food, and arrived in Beppu around 1:30 BUT ……. no snow in Beppu!

We decided to drive up to lake Shidaka to find some of the white stuff. The lake at Shidaka was frozen but there was only a tiny bit of snoe left. we made a few snowballs but it wasn’t the real thing! Next stop Yufuin – we went to KinRinko but hana was unimpressed by the snow-less scene so we drove back up the mountain. between Kijima and Yufuin ……………. Jackpot!

Proper snow! We made a snowman, had a snowball fight and had a whale of a time. Going back on Friday, this time with hana’s sledge!
